Accessibility
Accessibilty is very important to me. I would not like anyone not to be able to access any of my web pages if there is something I can do that would allow them to do so.
If there is any content on any page on any of my sites that you cannot access, please tell me by e-mailing me at john@affordableinternet.co.uk. I will do my best to make any necessary changes to enable access where possible.
Equally, if you are aware of any tools that can be used to enable access, please feel free to let me know by e-mailing me at john@affordableinternet.co.uk.
I am working towards improving all of my sites to the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) standards. You can find out more about these by clicking here. (Page opens in new window.)
Accessibility is so important to me that I am making the necessary changes and adding a new page like this, informing visitors how to access every site that I have created, free of charge to the website owner. All new sites will also meet the standards and include a page containing this guidance free of charge.
The standards promoted by that ensure the best use of visitors to a website are:
Headings and navigation menus
HTML heading tags are used to convey document structure. H1 tags are used for main titles, H2 tags for subtitles etc.
Navigation Menus
Navigation menus should be marked up as HTML lists I offer this as an alternative, usually at the bottom of the page. This ensures that the number of links in the list is read out at the start and it can be skipped easily.
Images
Images include descriptive alt tag attributes.
Colours
The site's font and background colour combinations contrast significantly.
Font size
The font sizes are re-sizable. (You can change the font size to make it either larger or smaller by changing the settings on the ‘View’ menu on your Internet Browser Menu Bar (the set of words in the second row in your Internet screen). Click on ‘View’, then ‘Text Size’ then ‘Largest’)
Stylesheets
Most sites uses cascading style sheets for all visual layout. If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, you can apply your own stylesheet onto this website by;
- Internet Explorer;
- select ‘Tools’, then ‘Internet Options’, then ‘Accessibility’,
- the 3 checkboxes you will see relate to colours, font styles or font sizes. Click on those that you want to ignore, for example clicking on ‘colours’ will display the page content in black on a white background, (or to your own settings) regardless of what the site designer has specified in the style sheet.
- in the same window you can change your style sheet by clicking the checkbox that says, 'format document using my style sheet' then browse to your style sheet and click OK.
- In Netscape;
- select Tools, then Options and then General,
- select fonts and colors and you will be given the choice to specify your own colours and fonts.
